The Birth of Sisters Thrive
Our Story
Life is a precious gift, one we must cherish. In August 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and by October, I attended my first breast cancer event as someone personally affected. It was there I learned the shocking reality: the survival rate for Black Indigenous Women of Color (BIWOC) was devastatingly low, and in Harris County—home to the world’s largest medical center—it was even lower than the national average, hovering at just 50%. During my recovery, I knew I had to take action. But how? And what could I do to make a real difference? From this urgency to change the trajectory of health outcomes for women like me, Sisters Thrive was born.
The same disparities and racial inequities I witnessed while working in the educational system were painfully clear in healthcare. Our goal at Sisters Thrive is to bridge that gap by advocating for health equity and ensuring that BIWOC don’t just survive, but truly thrive. We encourage women of color to prioritize themselves, to "put on their own oxygen masks first," and then use their voices to amplify the call to action in their communities—advocating for holistic well-being of mind, body, and spirit

Our Mission
Sisters Thrive is dedicated to advocating for the health, wellness, and empowerment of Black Indigenous Women of Color (BIWOC), with a special focus on the underfunded communities of Hiram Clarke, Sunnyside, and South Park. Through education, advocacy, and the creation of sacred spaces, we promote wellness of the mind, body, and spirit, equipping women with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to prioritize their lifestyle health and achieve equitable health outcomes.
Success Stories
Our First Community Baby Shower
We had the honor to host our first Community Baby Shower in Sunnyside was a beautiful celebration of new beginnings, connection, and community. We had the privilege of supporting expecting mothers with essential baby items, valuable health and welless resources, educational inforamtion, and encouragement from community partners and volunteers.
More than just an event, the baby shower created a welcoming space where families felt seen, supported, and empowered as they prepared to welcome their little ones. The overwhelming support from our community reinforced the importance of investing in maternal health and reminded us that, together, we can help every mother and baby thrive.
